In the long eighteenth century, between 1650 and 1820, Wales and the rest of Europe moved from a world of alchemy to one of steam engines and electricity. The scientists of Wales contributed to that changing world of new ideas, but their contribution often overlooked in many histories of the period. This book is a corrective that details the work of scientists from Wales in the four home nations of the isles, covering the intellectual changes of the period and their impact on religion; how scientists were educated in Wales; and, in a lengthy final section, some of the practical science undertaken and the social benefits that resulted.
Synthesizes Welsh history of science during the long eighteenth century.
" World of New Ideas": 16501820 is a series of two volumes revealing the often-forgotten contributions made by Welsh scientists to the scientific history of the long eighteenth century. The first volumeThe Islescenters on the contribution made in Wales particularly but also includes England, Scotland, and Ireland. By presenting a synthesis of published material and original research in three sections (Theory, Practice, and Results), its chapters examine how Welsh contributions fit into the history of science developed from the quasi-magical worlds of alchemy and early chemistry, through the advent of Cartesian and Newtonian science, to the world of technological innovation and industrial development.
