The book introduces a new way of seeing complex systems by revealing what rankings and composite indicators cannot show: internal structure, hidden imbalances, regime characteristics, recurring structural patterns, and possible pathways of transformation.
A Configurational Approach to Complex Systems Analysis: Introducing The Kauzon Quadrant Model develops a new configurational theory of complex systems and introduces the Kauzon Quadrant Model (KQM) as an original methodological framework for analyzing systems beyond rankings, composite indicators, and scalar measurement. The book introduces a new way of seeing complex systems by revealing what rankings and composite indicators cannot show: internal structure, hidden imbalances, regime characteristics, recurring structural patterns, and possible pathways of transformation. The book argues that complex systems should not be understood only through aggregated scores, but as structural configurations within a multidimensional relational space. KQM positions systems in a referentially anchored coordinate space, enabling the identification of structural regimes, asymmetries, disproportionalities, recurring patterns, and threshold-based transformation. The framework is presented as a general analytical architecture applicable across diverse systems, including health, education, research and development, governance, security, defence, innovation, and broader institutional systems. Empirical applications demonstrate that systems with similar rankings may belong to different structural regimes, while systems with different performance levels may share similar configurational characteristics. The main finding is that meaningful system analysis requires not only comparison of performance, but diagnosis of structural position and the patterns that emerge from it. The book is intended for scholars, policymakers, analysts, advanced students, and international institutions working with indicators, scoreboards, rankings, dashboards, and benchmarking tools, including the European Commission, OECD, WHO, World Bank, UNDP, UNESCO, WIPO, and Eurostat. It can also be used in university courses on systems analysis, public policy, governance, innovation studies, composite indicators, and complexity theory.
