Swiss painter Robert Zünd (1827-1909), also known in Switzerland as ''Master of the Beech Leaf'', is revered for his light-flooded paintings of bucolic landscapes. Swiss photographer Tobias Madörin, born 1965, has gained international recognition for his tableau-like images that document the interaction between the inhabitants and their surrounding environment. This new book, published to coincide with an exhibition at Kunstmuseum Luzern in summer 2017, features work by both artists.Rather than merely enjoying the beauty of the sun-lit paradise Zünd depicts in his precise manner, the book invites us to look more closely. For this purpose, Zünd''s paintings are juxtaposed with Madörin''s photographs of the same views, captured today with an analogue large format camera. Thanks to the slowness of the procedure and the wealth of detail achieved in working with such an apparatus, Madörin''s photographs boast an intensity comparable to that of Zünd''s paintings in terms of precision of the gaze. Robert Zünd (18271909) is Switzerlands Master of the Beech Leaf, revered for his light-flooded paintings of bucolic landscapes. Tobias Madörin has achieved wide critical acclaim for his photographic tableaus that depict the interactions between people and their surrounding environment. Embedded in both artists work is a fascination with observation, or the intensity of the gaze, and so their works form a stylistically consistent pairing, the subject of an upcoming exhibition at Kunstmuseum Luzern.
Bellevue juxtaposes Zünds paintings with photographs by Madörin, some of which show the same views. Zünds paintings of sunlit paradises are so precisely rendered that, rather than enjoying their beauty, viewers feel compelled to look more closely. Madörin achieves a similar intensity in his photographs, working with a large-format analogue camera that lends an unusual slowness and attention to detail to the photographic process. The book provides a new way of approaching the work of both artists and their perception of the landscape at the heart of Switzerland. A wealth of illustrations is complemented by essays by curators Fanni Fetzer and Dominik Müller and American art historian Jonathan Steinberg.
