Although portrayed as the ''boozing buffoon'' of Blackwood''s Edinburgh Magazine, Hogg (both as the celebrated Ettrick Shepherd and anonymously) was a key contributor of songs, narrative poems, tales and reviews to the liveliest of all early nineteenth-century periodicals.
