This book focuses on the church-historical development of the island of Rügen from its Christianization in 1168 to the introduction of the Reformation in the Duchy of Pomerania in 1534. In addition to the diocesan church organization, from the parishes to the episcopal administration and the spiritual jurisdiction to the chapels and masses , the individual clerics and their careers as mass priests, pastors and provosts are also examined. It becomes clear that the insular conditions differ in places from those of the Pomeranian mainland. Unlike previous research, the author attributes these peculiarities to influences from the Danish diocese of Roskilde, to which the island belonged for a long time as a result of its Christianization by the Danes. With this look at an often overlooked aspect of Rügen''s relationship with Scandinavia, the book also makes an important contribution to the island''s cultural history.
