Jacob Simon (1865–1943) stammte aus einer Familie, die in der jüdischen Gemeinde Hildburghausens über mehrere Generationen Führungspositionen innehatte. Nach dem Jurastudium in München, Leipzig und Jena ließ er sich 1891 als Rechtsanwalt in Meiningen nieder und übernahm 1919 den Vorsitz der dortigen jüdischen Gemeinde. 1933 verlor er die Zulassung als Notar, 1938 die als Rechtsanwalt. Jacob Simon und seine Ehefrau wurden 1942 nach Theresienstadt deportiert, wo beide im Jahr darauf starben. Seine zwischen 1919 und 1930 geschriebenen Erinnerungen, die hier erstmals veröffentlicht werden, zeichnen ein lebendiges Bild des Alltags jüdischen Lebens in Thüringen während der Weimarer Republik.
