Die erste Walpurgisnacht ist ein Gedicht von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, das von den Bemühungen der Druiden im Harz erzählt, ihre heidnischen Rituale zu praktizieren und sich damit gegen das neue und aufgezwungene Christentum zu gewähren.
Es wurde von Mendelssohn als weltliches Werk für Solisten (Alt, Tenor, Bariton, Bass), Chor und Orchester vertont. Die erste Fassung wurde 1831 komponiert, sein Opus 60 folgte ein Jahrzehnt später, 1843. Es besteht aus einer programmatischen Ouvertüre, gefolgt von neun Sätzen mit einer Dauer von etwa 35 Minuten. Der vorliegende Klavierauszug ist für gemischten Chor eingerichtet.
