It stresses the importance of a permanent Euro-American rivalry in partnership, especially in the fields of economy and defence; but it maintains that the Euro-American partnership is necessary until such time as the European Union is able to determine its own future. Rivalry, competition and confrontation remain the daily agenda of one of the most famous unions of twentieth-century international relations.
