In 1927 Charles Whieldon bought a brand-new twenty-seat REO Pullman bus and started a company that would last for forty-six years. His commitment saw the business through the Second World War, strikes and upheavals. The Green Bus fleet has been described as ‘eclectic’, ranging from the unique such as the King and Taylor-bodied Foden to the far more common Guy Arab single-deck vehicles bought second-hand via the Huddersfield fleet. The Green Bus spread out into coaching activities as well, buying both new and ‘pre-loved’ vehicles. The business''s first base was in Hollington between Uttoxeter and Cheadle in Staffordshire, but soon larger premises were required. A move was made to Bridge Street in Uttoxeter, and that depot remained the operating centre throughout the rest of the company’s existence. As the services expanded, a second yard was established in Rugeley and this eventually became the main office.
Donald Handley showcases a fascinating selection of the vehicles that Green Bus operated around Uttoxeter, Rugeley, Hednesford, Cannock and the surrounding areas.
