In 1902, the Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde (18631957) was appointed to Weimar by Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst to work there as an artistic advisor for handicrafts, arts and crafts and industry. The present edition of 200 texts, some of which were published for the first time, now provides unfamiliar insights into the life and work of his Weimar period. They illustrate the history of his appointment to Weimar, the initial inspection activities in craft and industrial establishments, the development of the arts and crafts seminar he set up to become an arts and crafts school and its activities until it was closed in 1915. In addition, there are documents of new plans on the artistic influence on industry and crafts as well as the teaching of applied arts and architecture after completing his work in Weimar, which not least prepared the foundation of the State Bauhaus in 1919.
