Although written over two hundred years ago, this description still fits the town today. After centuries of gradual evolution, the pace of change accelerated following the opening of the Hull to Hornsea railway in the late nineteenth century and the building of the ill-fated pier. The railway opened up Hornsea as a sea-side resort and the resulting increase in affluence brought changes to Hornsea that can be readily followed in the pages of this book.
