This biography of the Muslim scholastic and humanist Ibn 'Aqil sheds light on one of the most important periods of classical Islam, one which has had a significant impact on religious and intellectual culture in the Christian Latin West.

The major concern of this book on Ibn ''Aqil is the study of the main currents of his thought. The century of Ibn ''Aqil is a pivotal period in religious thought and in the development of institutions of higher learning. His biography sheds light on one of the most important periods of classical Islam, one which has had its impact on religion and intellectual culture in the Christian Latin West. His thought is the product of his attempt to reconcile reason and revelation.
George Makdisi covers with great depth and authority the philosophical, legal and theological currents of medieval Islam. The work fills a real gap in its relation to Ibn ''Aqil''s thought to his milieu and the stream of theological development in Islam.
