Döbling, Vienna’s 19th district, was home to notorious Jewish families of entrepreneurs, scientists, intellectuals, and artists. This book reconstructs the story of this upper bourgeois milieu, who for decades dominated the city’s political, cultural, and economic life. Drawing on previously unexamined personal sources, it traces their rise to prominence, their destruction under National Socialism, and their new beginning in America. It evokes a world of distinction and splendor abruptly shattered. Most of them survived thanks to their wealth and international networks, yet their stories remained largely untold due to feelings of guilt and doubts about their own victimhood.
