This study critically explores the lives of women in Britain during the immediate postwar period 1945-64, and re-examines the current conception of the 1950s as a nadir for women - when the values of domesticity and motherhood were paramount.
Imagining Home offers a unique examination of ideas and images of home in Britain during a period of national decline and loss of imperial power. In exploring the relationship between gender, ''race'' and national identity, it higlights the continuing importance of empire in imaginings of the nation during a period of decolonization.
