A young Indian writer journeys down the Ganges to write about his memories of an enigmatic Parisienne named Jaya. Along the way, he meets a dancing girl named Zehra who resurrects the memory of Jaya. The journey is filled with encounters with various individuals, leading to a unique travelogue-novel that was later adapted into a cult film.

When Jaya Ganga was first published in French, it created more than a stir initerary circles.
