Gwyn Thomas (1913-1981) was one of the most famous Welshmen of the century: novelist, short story writer, dramatist, Punch columnist, radio broadcaster, and raconteur. Those who know his autobiography, A Few Selected Exits will welcome this biography, for, as Thomas once wrote, If I have an art, obliquity is its essence, and his autobiography gives readers few details. Born in Wales'' Rhondda valley, he was the youngest of twelve children and lived through the poverty of the Depression. For a brief period he read Modern Languages at Oxford, but then, unemployed, he began writing novels about his valley and its people, before becoming a teacher. Eventually he began to write full-time and then became influential and successful in broadcasting. Michael Parnell edited Thomas'' Selected Short Stories.

Novelist, playwright, broadcaster, raconteur: by the time of his early death in 1981, Gwyn Thomas was widely admired as all these things, in addition to being a much-loved columnist in Punch.

Once described as ''the greatest talker in the world'' he was the veteran entertainer of The Brains Trust and Tonight, and a moving commentator on the Aberfan disaster.

A former schoolmaster turned novelist turned programme maker, Thomas''s friends included Richard Burton, Jack Hylton, Stanley Baker, Sam Wannamaker and Donald Houston. Yet beyond the world of celebrity he was a writer passionately committed to a humane socialism, most of whose work, novels, stories, plays, are set in or informed by his native Rhondda valley. Writing of the appalling poverty he and his fellow south Walians suffered during his early years, Thomas was inspired by his community and chose not bitter despair, but humour in the face of adversity. As Michael Parnell''s absorbing and highly readable biography chronicles, Thomas''s infectious gaiety was also underlain by his own anxieties and imperfections.

"Thoroughly good… helpfully lays out many details of a powerful and artistic maverick whose success as a broadcaster deflected and reduced literary appreciation of his large output"
Frank Delaney

Michael Parnell (1934-1991) was for many years Senior Lecturer in English at the Polytechnic of Wales. In addition to editing Gwyn Thomas''s Selected Short Stories, he was also the author of Eric Linklater: A Critical Biography, which won the Yorkshire Post Prize for Best First Work in 1984.
