for mezzo-soprano solo, SATB, brass quintet, organ, and timpani This deeply profound work combines a shortened form of the Latin Mass with Biblical passages that speak of peace. The narrative is led by the mezzo-soprano soloist, who sets the reflective tone of the piece with a verse from St John''s Gospel spoken by Jesus to his disciples, before a prayerful Kyrie from the choir. The energetic Gloria is driven by brass and timpani, and addresses the subject of war and its futility, with texts from the books of Revelation, James, and Matthew. The contemplative Sanctus and Benedictus are characterized by fluid asymmetrical 7/8 rhythms and an expressive solo section for mezzo-soprano and brass quintet. The consoling music of the Agnus Dei builds towards soloist and choir uniting to sing of ''the peace of God, which passeth all understanding''. A short coda recalls music from the Kyrie, with a beseeching final statement from the soloist: ''dona nobis pacem'' (''give us peace'').
