Kaiser Maximilian I. (1486/93–1519) regierte das Heilige Römische Reich über dreißig entscheidende Jahre, vom Kampf über das burgundische Erbe bis zur Reformation. Unter seiner Kriegs- und Heiratspolitik stieg das Haus Habsburg zur europäischen Großmacht auf. ‚Maximilians Welt‘ erscheint als eine Welt des Übergangs, zwischen Mittelalter und Neuzeit, Tradition und Innovation. Der Kaiserhof war ein faszinierendes Modernisierungszentrum, zog Gelehrte und Künstler an: Hier entstanden unter Einfluss von Rittertum und Renaissance subtile Werke der Gedächtniskultur wie der Roman ‚Weißkunig‘, das Ambraser Heldenbuch oder Dürers ‚Ehrenpforte‘. Emperor Maximilian I (1486/93–1519) ruled the Holy Roman Empire more than thirty decisive years from the war on the Burgundian heritage to the reformation. With his policies of war and marriage, Emperor Maximilian I laid the foundations upon which the Habsburgs rose to become a great European power. "Maximilian’s world" appears as a world of transition, between the middle ages and the modern age, between tradition and innovation. His palace was a fascinating centre of modernisation and attracted scholars and artists. Here, influenced by knighthood and Renaissance subtle works of memorial like the novel "Weißkunig" ("The White King"), "Das Ambraser Heldenbuch" ("The Ambras Castle Book of Heroes") or Albrecht Dürer’s "Ehrenpforte" ("The Triumphal Arch") were created. The volume unfolds a wide range of the reign of Maximilian I and concerns itself with the subjects of culture, memorial, foreign policy and war as well as domestic policy and constitution.
