This book challenges the prevailing notion that Sanskrit ‘died’ centuries ago by examining an unexplored frontier: modern life-writing in Sanskrit. Countering colonial-era assumptions that only ancient Sanskrit literature merits scholarly attention, this volume demonstrates how contemporary Sanskrit authors have revitalized the language through autobiographical and biographical narratives, genres that never fully developed in classical Sanskrit literature. Divided into two parts, the book first explores autobiographical writing, analyzing how contemporary authors use Sanskrit prose and verse to record lived experiences, from Partition trauma to everyday life accounts. Freed from traditional patronage constraints, these writers employ innovative forms while maintaining creative continuity with earlier literary traditions. The second section examines biographical narratives, exploring how modern biographers adapt Western genres to South Asian contexts and other multifaceted issues. It also features a pioneering translation of a Dalit life story into a language historically associated with elite culture. Focusing on authors writing between the late nineteenth century and present day, the contributors employ close reading, autobiography theories, trauma studies, memory studies and other relevant approaches to shed light on these texts. Their analysis reveals how Sanskrit writers navigated the transition from pre-modern to modern eras, experimenting with European literary models while remaining rooted in Sanskrit literary tradition. This thematically coherent collection fills a critical gap in scholarship on modern Sanskrit literature, offering the first sustained study of a single concept across contemporary Sanskrit works. By surveying these life narratives, the volume illuminates the literary, historical, and cultural contexts that shaped modern Sanskrit's development, demonstrating the language's continued vitality as a creative medium and challenging assumptions about linguistic death and literary stagnation.
