Monuments of Diverse Heritage in Early America: Placemaking and Preservation by Black, Indigenous, and Jewish Peoples explores a more inclusive history of preserving public historic sites. At a time when some Americans have embraced white nationalism in response to unfolding demographic changes and others celebrate individual identities over all else, an inclusive, tolerant, and unifying historical vision is sorely needed. While past preservation efforts sometimes resulted in exclusionary forms of historical inspiration, that need not be the case in the future. Bringing greater attention to the diverse heritage of the United States will not only help dismantle the lingering remnants of exclusionary and elitist narratives but also celebrate a pluralistic and diverse past and present. An inclusive, empowering history can provide social cohesion while allowing room for individual groups to have authority over their pasts and representation in public, side-by-side with one another.

Monuments of Diverse Heritage in Early America: Placemaking and Preservation by Black, Indigenous, and Jewish Peoples explores a more inclusive history on the preservation of public historic sites. This study utilizes a critical perspective from African Americans, indigenous peoples, and Jews as they represent a unique viewpoint to the foundational period of the United States as seen through the lens of the historic built environment. In the instance of Black, indigenous, and Jewish peoples that built new places after the American Revolution, it is important that these sites be properly recognized and preserved to diversify our understanding of the past. Historians, preservationists, and community leaders have also advocated that the diversity deficit within their professions needs to be addressed in the stewarding and interpretation of the past and associated sites. This can be challenging when Euromericans engage the past in a way that makes them distrustful of those who are different from them. Through a Multicultural Studies approach, Monuments of Diverse Heritage in Early America takes an important step in rectifying this shortcoming by establishing knowledge of a counternarrative past that can be used for enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion at historic sites and American history interpretation in an informed way.
