The first in a trilogy, Over Sea begins the story of Viking survival as seen through the eyes of female protagonist Bera, who comes of age both as a woman and visionary leader in a harsh, doubting world. Set at the topmost edge of the Ice-Rimmed Sea around 920AD, when Viking expansion was at its height, the main characters trade from the Golden Horn to volcanic Iceland and as far West as Ireland. Born and raised in a stark fishing village, Bera is the latest in a long line of Vallas, whose power is passed down through the female line. But Bera's mother dies when she is four, leaving her unable to understand her inherited powers, or use her skern (from Old Norse fylgja, meaning twin spirit). Unable to prevent the death of her younger foster brother, killed by one of these wealthy traders, or prevent her father selling her in marriage their leader, Bera vows to seek revenge. As she discovers more about Valla passion and betrayal; struggling to find her own skills in healing, love and kinship; her visions reveal looming disaster. Bera must face terrible loss to save her people. Steeped in genuine Norse belief, mixed with British dark myths and legends, the story has emotional strength, and the powerful voice of Bera makes her journey feel both timeless and deeply empowering.
