In a focused and disciplined way, through carefully developed exercises, projects, and group activities, students are given the means to relate abstract theories and concepts to their own personality development and experience. The exercises have been devised to attract students' thoughtful attention. Many of them deal with private aspects of students' lives and are designed to be completed individually out of the classroom and reviewed by the instructor alone. There are also some classroom exercises that involve working with peers in small-group discussions. These latter activities draw upon those personal experiences that most students are enthusiastic about sharing.
