The future of the university This book serves not only to document the symposium “Radical University,” which highlighted the contribution of the university to social development, it also discusses interdisciplinarity and dialogue between art and science in relation to social relevance and responsibility. Furthermore, it pays tribute to the work of Rector Gerald Bast at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. By establishing several new programs of interdisciplinary study, particularly pertaining to the convergence of art and science, and by taking a clear sociopolitical stance, he laid down important markers for the university. This publication explores three core themes: art and science; the development of a campus university; and educational reform. Das Buch dokumentiert nicht nur das Symposium „Radikale Universität“, das die gesellschaftsbildende Kraft der Universität, die Interdisziplinarität und den Dialog zwischen Kunst und Wissenschaft im Spannungsfeld sozialer Relevanz und Verantwortung beleuchtete. Es würdigt auch das Wirken von Rektor Gerald Bast an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien: Mit der Einrichtung zahlreicher neuer interdisziplinärer Studien, der Annäherung von Kunst und Wissenschaft und einer klaren gesellschaftspolitischen Haltung setzte er wichtige Impulse.

Die Publikation untersucht drei Kernthemen: Kunst und Wissenschaft, den Ausbau der Universität zum Campus und die Bildungsreform. Alle Texte verhandeln die Zukunft der Bildung in Zeiten radikaler Veränderung, um radikale Perspektiven auf die Institution Universität zu entwickeln.
