One of the most crucial and difficult tasks modern schools have to face (from an organisational, pedagogical and didactic perspective) is the multilingualism of their pupils. For historical reasons a variety of languages has always been spoken in most European countries, but in the latter half of the 20th century the number of languages has augmented considerably due to economic migration and labour mobility. This represents a major challenge for European schools as regards legal, organisational, pedagogic and didactic issues. This book presents recent research findings as well as a number of comparative studies of present-day school contexts in different European countries.
