This book offers two original and significant contributions to the study of social movements and political transformation through an innovative lens.
First, it highlights the contemporary centrality of both new and long-standing social movements, showing how they supply various forms of resistance and meaning to diverse audiences, publics, and institutions. This emphasis opens the door to reconceptualising issues such as identity construction, the emergence of new rights in contexts of political change (especially in education, as illustrated by the specific example examined in this book), and the appropriation and execution of collective actions in an increasingly connected yet disconnected world, operating across multiple argumentative and performative scales.
Second, this book problematises the emerging role of social movements that arise from profound social and political transformations, shifts that have led to the formation of new political elites in specific contexts, as demonstrated by the Chilean case. In parallel, this book provides innovative methodological approaches for examining the transition from citizenship rooted in resistance to citizenship characterised by the exercise of political power.
In other words, this book underscores the fact that the theoretical and methodological agendas surrounding social movements and their political transformations remain unfinished. A key challenge in the social sciences is how to clearly define and circumscribe the objects of study in this field, given the interwoven social complexities that can make these boundaries appear opaque or porous. Consequently, this book is indispensable for anyone looking to understand social movements in Latin America. It also stresses the pressing need to develop new analytical categories and investigative tools capable of capturing the realities of our current historical juncture, thus establishing itself as a cornerstone in the bibliography of this field of study.
