The Ashiel Mystery: A Detective Story, a cryptography murder mystery, was written before 1915. This mystery is supposedly set in the early 20th century in England and Scotland. The story of Sir Arthur Byrne, who hurriedly wed and adopted his new wife's adoptive daughter as his own, serves as the basis for the book. In England, a little child is raised in a poor home and only learns that her parents were not her biological parents when her mother passes away. The couple then spends the next few years living abroad because Sir Arthur was a member of the British diplomatic service. Sadly, Arthur's wife died and he was left alone with Juliet, his adopted daughter. A detective by the name of Gimblet is given the case to solve the crime. However, Juliet's biological parents are unknown. Nobody is sure, but the inquiry into the murder and discovery makes the narrative well worth reading. What may have been being now irretrievably gone? The plot does turn into a good mystery if you can get over the basic idea of the narrative. There are many twists and turns, a castle, a Scottish landscape, secret passages, hidden messages, and murder.
