The Interiors Theory Primer

In a world where life is increasingly defined by interior conditions, this Primer provides insight into the significance of interior spaces and experiences. This book draws upon a range of historic to contemporary scholarship and design project examples to discuss significant areas of interest in interiors.

Organized into three sections, this book addresses long-standing issues at the core of interiors, starting with questions of experience and inhabitation, before moving to emerging areas of concern such as virtuality, biophilia, and social justice. Each chapter presents a key interior design topic, reviewing pertinent scholarship and design precedents and offering suggestions for further reading related to each topic. While there is an expanding body of literature that seeks to explain and theorize interior spaces and experiences, there has not—until now—been a cohesive attempt to organize and articulate the major ideas and themes. The exploration of interior spaces encapsulates real experience, as well as exploring the significance of interior design as a professional and academic discipline.
