This is the story of Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, whose grandfather was a millionaire railway contractor and bridge builder, and who inherited half a million pounds each.

Gwendoline and Margaret Davies of Gregynog are famous in Wales for their collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings which are now held by the National Museum Cardiff. Inheritors of great wealth from their industrialist grandfather, the women became renowned for their philanthropy and for the creation, in 1920, of a centre for music and the arts at Gregynog Hall in Montgomeryshire, which they hoped would enrich the lives of the people of Wales, who were suffering in the aftermath of World War I. This intimate biography provides a unique account of these shy and complex women.
