This reissue is the first complete printed reproduction of what was the most influential maritime publication of its day. The subjects covered range from accounts of battles and lists of ships to notices of promotions and marriages, courts martial and deaths, and biographies, poetry and letters. Each volume also contains engravings and charts relating to naval engagements and important harbours around the world. Volume 4 (1800) contains biographies of the heroes of recent significant battles, including Earl St. Vincent and Viscount Duncan. Articles on naval tactics focus on the Battle of the Nile in 1797 and French maritime affairs. Technical and professional items include a report of early trials of Robert Fulton's prototype submarine, discussions on gunnery, medical articles and topographical descriptions of Gibraltar and Brest.
