The subjects covered range from accounts of battles and lists of ships to notices of promotions and marriages, courts martial and deaths, and biographies, poetry and letters. Each volume also contains engravings and charts relating to naval engagements and important harbours around the world. Volume 7, published in 1802 during the brief Peace of Amiens, focuses mainly on technical and professional matters, such as naval education, proposals for life-belts and lifeboats, and concerns about the supply of wood for increased ship building. It reports that mutinies on HMS Temeraire and other ships were rapidly ended by executions, and includes topographical information on Bordeaux, St. John's, Newfoundland and Trinidad.
