Tradition and Modernity in Romanian Culture and Civilization

The studies included in this volume reflect on the development of Romanian society over the past four centuries in the areas of history, politics, sociology, literature, religion, and culture.

The beginning of a new millennium provided an excellent opportunity to reflect on the development of Romanian society over the past four centuries and to evaluate the impact that both tradition and modernity have had on its evolution. For this reason, “Tradition and Modernity in Romanian Culture and Civilization, 1600-2000” was chosen as the theme for the Sixth International Conference of the Center for Romanian Studies, held in Iași, Romania, on 3-4 July 2000, in collaboration with the A.D. Xenopol Institute of History. This volume includes studies by distinguished scholars from around the world.
