Transnational Holocaust Studies in History and Memory

This book reflects on these scales of analysis and reveals how they interact with each other, applying a transnational framework to both the history and memory of the Holocaust. The authors in this volume present a transnational history that exposes the worldwide ramifications of the Holocaust that continue to this day.

Place is one of the core building blocks of our understanding of history, providing—along with time—the fundamental framework for how we perceive of the past. Historical research has often relied upon place—alongside myriad social and physical categories of analysis—to tell stories that revolve around certain locations and the events that take place within them, be they histories of villages, towns, nations, regions, continents, or even the globe; research has for a long time been bookended by spatial borders. This book reflects on these scales of analysis and reveals how they interact with each other, applying a transnational framework to both the history and memory of the Holocaust. In pushing beyond frameworks of national borders and by recognizing the connected and interdependent nature of our global world, the authors in this volume present a transnational history that exposes the worldwide ramifications of the Holocaust that continue to this day.
