Selected Papers from the IWA International Conference on Sustainable Development of Chemical Industries with the Environment - Water and Wastewater Management, held in Tsukuba, Japan, 14-16 July 2005. Chemical industries face new challenges as they strive towards sustainable development and production with environmental compatibility. Sound management of toxic chemicals is now one of the major global concerns for chemical industries. The Stockholm Convention focusing on persistent organic pollutants is an example of such efforts, which include the introduction of programs by OECD for toxic risk management to support government and industries. Many developed countries have introduced open activities on chemicals generated by industries such as Regulation of Pollutant Release and Transfer Register. These activities promote chemical industries to attain a higher level of water and waste management for toxic chemicals. These concepts were the drivers for a highly successful conference focusing on the latest developments in treatment processes and management strategies that are contributing to the new sustainable and environmentally compatible shape of the chemical industries. These proceedings comprise 37 papers, selected following a full peer review, which reveal the state of the art in water and wastewater management for the chemical and petrochemical industries. They constitute an essential reference source for research scientists, chemical and environmental engineers, process designers, plant managers and regulators actively interested in the chemicals industries.
