Waterborne Pathogens

Microbiological waterborne disease remains a significant concern for the worldwide water community. Whether investigating emerging pathogens or developing a new control strategy, the challenges for professionals in water supply and public health are daunting. Special areas of concern include sources of pathogens, detection methods, outbreak investigations, new water and wastewater treatment technologies, and public health effects. These selected proceedings are reflective of the presentations offered by experts from twenty countries who attended the Lisbon symposium. From this high-quality programme eighteen articles have been selected following peer review. They cover aspects of the monitoring and treatment of pathogenic microbes - bacteria, viruses, Cryptosporidium and Giardia and their impacts and epidemiology, including risk assessment and management strategies. These proceedings will provide valuable insights for research scientists, sanitary engineers, regulators and managers interested in pathogenic microorganisms in water and public health.
