The Theory of the Chemostat : Dynamics of Microbial Competition

This book gives a theoretical treatment of the competition between different strains of micro-organisms consuming a single nutrient in a common laboratory device called a chemostat. Mathematical analysis using tools of dynamical systems leads to general and testable predictions of the behaviour of real ecological and biotechnology systems.

The chemostat is a basic piece of laboratory apparatus, yet it has occupied an increasingly central role in ecological studies. The ecological environment created by a chemostat is one of the few completely controlled experimental systems for testing microbial growth and competition.
